Streedagh & the Spanish Armada

Streedagh Strand in north county Sligo is a beautiful location and also the site of significant underwater archaeology. Here beneath the waves lie the remains of three great Spanish ships, “La Armada Invincible”, dating to 1588

At this time the Spanish empire was expanding across Europe under the reign of King Phillip II, who formed the Spanish fleet, “La Armada Felicissima”. In September of 1588, a large number of already damaged ships fell behind the main fleet and were blasted onto the coast from Antrim to Kerry.

As a result, three of these ships, La Lavia, a Venetian trader of 728 tons, Santa Maria de Vison, a merchantman from Dubrovink of 660 tons and La Julianna, a merchantman from Barcellona of 869 tons, were wrecked at Streedagh.

The three wreck sites were first discovered in 1985 by an English diver group led by Stephen Birch and overseen by the maritime archaeologist Dr. Colin Martin.

If you are interested in learning more, you can contact maritime archaeologist Auriel Robinson of Seatrails for a guided walk at Streedagh.
